About
I am a web developer in metro Detroit. I have been building web applications since 1999, mostly large enterprise PHP systems that stay in production for years.
I am a web developer and I live in metro Detroit. I have been doing this work since 1999, so I have watched a lot of tools and frameworks come and go. What has not changed is how I like to work: build something, put it in production, and then stay with it long enough to find out what actually breaks.
The projects I work on
Most of my career has been at WIT Inc. I am the lead developer for client work there, and the job covers the whole thing; gathering requirements, writing the code, supporting it in production, and looking after the servers it runs on.
The project I have spent the most years on is a learning management system for continuing education compliance in Detroit and Wayne County. More than 70,000 practitioners use it. It is really three PHP applications: one for practitioners, one for provider administrators, and one for network administrators, running on SQL Server 2019 across Windows Server/IIS and Linux, with Azure Virtual Machines, Storage Accounts and DNS underneath. Over the years, we at WIT integrated it with ScormCloud for course tracking, Power BI Embed for the compliance dashboards, Qualtrics for surveys, Twilio for SMS, and Authorize.Net for payments. We converted 19+ old Classic ASP admin modules to PHP MVC, moved 9 background jobs off URL triggers and onto CLI commands, and designed the disaster recovery setup with a hot standby, cloud backup and a central sync server. On a normal week it moves around 851 GB of video a day and about 25,000 compliance emails.
We also built the public website for the provider network behind that system, which serves over 120,000 children and adults. It ran for several years before the network rebuilt it on a different platform. It had provider search with Bing Maps, an automated directory update that parsed their Access database, accessibility work toward WCAG, and automatic PDF translation using Azure Translator.
